By: Michael Barber
Hello fellow bow fishers I live in upstate New York. I have been bow fishing for 14 years. I am really decided to the sport of bowfishing. They say that bowfishing is the fasted growing archery sport but when people talk about bowfishing New York is rarely talked about. Sure we don’t have bighead carp or alligator gar, but we do have nice size carp here. If you go to the right body of water at the right time you could shoot 40lb. fish or even bigger ones.
Here in New York we have two large bowfishing tournaments. The first one and the oldest in New York is the Massena tournament. This shoot draws over 200 shooters from seven states, and even Canada. Most shooters shoot the St. Lawrence River this is were the 40lb. fish are shot. The second one is the Springfling Bowfishing Tournament this one is going on to its fifth year, and draws around 30 teams from five states and Canada. This shoot is run out of Saratoga Lake. You can shoot around 30lb. fish. You can go to www.nybowfishing .com for more information on this shoot.
In New York there are some great bodies of water to bowfish in. There is Saratoga Lake, Lake Champlain, and also some rivers that offer great bowfishing the Hudson, Mohawk, and the St. Lawrence. In the the western part of New York you have the Finger Lakes that you can bowfish.
If you are a reader of this article and vacation in New York may be you should think about bringing your bowfishing gear. A day out bowfishing could turn a good vacation into a great one. If you have the opportunity to come to New York to bowfish you should, and if you are talking to your buddies about bowfishing mention New York and tell about all the opportunities here.
Hope to see you on the water.
